Sootblowers used in high-temperature zones, for example in superheater tube banks and (seldom) combustion chambers on watertube boilers, are generally of the twin opposing-nozzle type and are fully traversing and retractable when not in use. Many include facilities for rotation to give better coverage .
In lower-temperature zones, the nozzles are usually non-retractable, although lateral movement to give a wide area of cleaning may be possible. Single- or multi-jet equipment may be used. With a single-return-pass economic boiler one or two retractable nozzles are located in the rear wall facing the return tubes. On double-return economic boilers, traversable multi-jet nozzles are usually installed in the front smokebox
